Meet Stephanie

A Glimpse into My Journey: 
Over the course of fifteen years, I have thoughtfully held space for numerous individuals, accompanying them on their unique paths towards healing. Guiding these journeys has been both a privilege and an honor. My experience spans a diverse spectrum, from working with at-risk youth in the heart of Kansas City, MO, to engaging with indigenous people from the Pueblos of New Mexico. My interactions have embraced individuals aged 4 to 84, forming a rich tapestry of diversity. Throughout it all, I’ve discovered that hands-on, experiential learning and forming emotional bonds with co-learners are the most effective avenues for clients to forge ahead towards emotional and mental equilibrium. My appreciation for group work and the role of community in the healing process is deeply ingrained. 
 
Revealing the Spark: 
My journey into this field was ignited during my years as a documentary filmmaker in Chicago. Those experiences illuminated my innate ability to genuinely listen to people’s profoundly heartfelt stories and empathize with their truths. Each of my films was a powerful fusion of personal narratives and transformative breakthroughs. When I returned to academia in my thirties, eager to add credentials after my name, my mentors wisely guided me towards enhancing my natural psychological aptitude. They encouraged me to pursue a master’s degree in social work from the esteemed program at The University of Kansas. There, I flourished and found innovative ways to integrate film and art into my therapeutic approach.  
 
A Heartwarming Connection: 
The most rewarding aspect of my profession is the feedback from my clients. I vividly recall a client sharing that they had never felt truly deserving of care and well-being until they heard my words, “it’s your birthright.” Those words became etched in their mind, and the belief in their inherent worth followed suit. I cherish the moments when clients experience that “aha” moment, and suddenly, their perspective widens infinitely. It’s a truly expansive experience.
 
Embracing the Avisa Community: 
What deeply resonates with me about Avisa is its unique fusion of the heart of a small, family-owned business and the structure of a well-established, seasoned corporation. It’s a rare gem within the mental health industry, offering the best of both worlds. 
 
Nurturing the Spirit of Play: 
As for my leisure pursuits, I wholeheartedly believe in the transformative power of play. You’ll find me swimming and unwinding on the beach, practicing yoga, expressing myself through painting, savoring live music, capturing portraits through photography, dancing, and tending to my garden.
